A week ago Sunday we visited a house church in Brooklyn, then decided to drive out Long Island and explore. We stopped at some stores while driving around, then finally around sunset ended up at this long, thin island off the coast of Long Island. The boys wanted to walk on the beach (we had been here once before but didn't stop) and I wanted to take some pictures with the beautiful sunset in the background, so we stopped for a bit.
The sunset taken from the Robert Moses Causeway, which leads to what we think is called Fire Island.
Here's the bridge...I love all the bridges around here!
Jonathan, and yes, he was admonished for being out of his shoulder belt!
Trying to figure out how to get to the actual beach...
We made it! Joey is thrilled to be in the sand.
The moon over the beach, as the sky slowly darkens.
Jeremy with the boys...
Me with the boys...
The lighter-colored sand in the foreground is about 12"-18" higher than the wet sand below. The boys enjoyed running out on the wet sand, then scrambling up on the higher, dry sand as the waves came in. Unfortunately, we had a few misses and by the time we left, we had some very wet and sandy shoes, socks, and pants hems!
Running from the tide...
Happy Jordan!
The moon again...it was pretty dark by this point.
One sticky, sandy, snotty (he'd fallen in the water and been crying), pretty much pitiful little Joey...
Heading back across the sand to the parking area. The parking area was a good quarter-mile from the water's edge.
One last shot of what's left of the sunset.
We really enjoyed exploring! It's hard to believe that this beautiful, quiet beach is less than an hour's drive from our apartment in Manhattan!

STUNNING Photos Jenny! Did you get that new camera? I LOVE the family beach shots!
Wow great pics! What incredible memories you are creating with your family!
It is amazing that there is that kind of tranquility just an hour away from the city!
What an awesome sunset. They boys really looked like they were having fun. BTW, check out Stef's baby shower, http://ourfirstbaby-stefnscott.blogspot.com/
We did fabric painting on some organic cotton onsies. Kids and adults loved it. She received lots of diapers which she was really wanting. Only 4 weeks to go (she hopes)
Allette...Thanks! No I haven't bought a new camera yet. I'm using Jeremy's, which is pretty hit-or-miss, but at least I have access to a digital camera!
Jill...we too are amazed at all the beautiful, quiet places we have found within a short drive of the city! I need my breaks from so much, uh, urban-ness!
Linda...I'm glad you are enjoying the pictures of your grandboys! They really do have a great time on our outings. I looked at Stef's shower pictures briefly last night...I'll have to go back and leave her a comment. It looks like everyone had a good time! We can't wait to see pictures of our newest niece or nephew! :)
